Desert Farms – Camel Milk

So if you read the title and thought it was a typo – it is not! In fact, Bedouins, nomads and pastoral cultures around the world have relished camel milk for a really long time. It was originally used medicinally in the Middle East and now recently in the US as an alternative treatment for children with Autism and people with Diabetes. Desert Farms are a company that specialize in the selling of this unique product by partnering with rural farm families to bridge the gap between communities and bring the “white gold of the desert” to eager consumers.

With Camel farms and partners all over the continental U.S, great camel milk starts with great local farmers and a healthy herd. The folks at Desert Farms will select farmers who use “Good Manufacturing Practices” and abide by fair minimum standards to improve their social and environmental performance year after year. All camels are pasture-raised, meaning that they are allowed to eat all the different natural flora and fauna in the pastures, a natural diet their bodies can easily handle – and one that keeps them happy and healthy.

So what’s it all about you say? Simply put, camel milk looks and tastes like regular milk. It is however 50% lower in fat, a natural probiotic and an excellent source of calcium, vitamin B1, potassium and phosphorous – but it doesn’t end there. Camel milk also has many other health benefits. Scientists have found that camel milk has significantly more GABA needed for healthy brain development, over 200 different proteins and is the closest substitute to human mother milk. There is even evidence to suggest its constituency can assist those with diabetes and autism (all this information is available on their website).

What about a real world test? I did try both Raw camel milk and the Kefir (fermented) variety. It does in fact taste like milk, probably not skim, more like 2% or Homogenized full fat milk. Personally, the first time I tried it, I did notice a strange after taste on the raw variety but I honestly feel as though it did assist me with my digestion and overall gut health. I won’t go into the details on that one. The Kefir variety was a different story, I unfortunately could not get past one gulp, it tasted like milk that had gone bad, so I passed on that one.

Would I substitute it for milk? Yes, however, the price differentiation I feel will turn many people away. I understand there are many less camels in the world and this is the reason for the higher cost, but, I just don’t see people willing to fit the bill unless they buy into the claims.

As always, the choice is up to you.
