This past week in Las Vegas, The Consumer Electronics Show or CES as it also known has been in full swing.
For the unaccustomed, CES showcases more than 4,400 exhibiting companies, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and more; a conference program with more than 250 conference sessions and more than 170,000 attendees from 160 countries.
With 11 official venues, CES spans more than 2.9 million net square feet of exhibit space and features 36 product categories and 22 Marketplaces. It is also an exciting time for us tech reviewers because we get a sneak peak of what is on the horizon in 2020 and beyond.
Below, we have compiled a list of the best new products from this years’ show.
Withings Scanwatch
Withings are back with another classy looking anti-smartwatch that features some powerful health-oriented features such as the ability to find abnormal cardiac activity thanks to embedded ECG technology in the 24/7 heart rate scanner. It also can track your sleep and indicate signs of sleep apnea through a built-in oxygen or sp02 sensor.
With an impressive 30 days battery life and all the usual smartwatch features including activity tracking, an altimeter, connected GPS, and water resistance – this is one to buy this coming year if you are serious about your health.
Sony Vision-S Concept Car
Sony unveiled its first ever electric concept car the Vision-S and boy did it get peoples mouths motoring. Looking like a sport sedan with some sexy curves in all the right places, Sony set out to showcase what their technology could do in new unchartered waters.
With a plethora of screens littering the inside of a car, looking like something more from 2120, the car features some serious new tech. showing that Sony can once again lead the pack in the technological world.With everything from expansive screens to operate and entertain yourself within, as well as, Time of Flight (ToF) sensors able to detect the passengers and driver, adjusting settings to suit whoever is there; 360 Reality audio for a fuller in car audio experience; a connected dash cam and even Level 2 autonomous driving capability.
With a promise of 0 to 60 Mph in about 4.5 seconds and about 300 miles on a single charge, this was an unexpected and welcome addition this year and really impressed us.
Hydraloop
The Hydraloop was the one product that we saw this year that we thought is a form of tech. that could be life changing for generations to come.
Essentially this is a water recycling device, taking your existing waste water and recycling it back into usable water for other household water needs.
Promising to recycle up to 85% of water used, by recycling ‘at the source’ and using water twice, the company claims it can substantially curb the increasing demand for fresh water.
The unique and patented game changing water treatment technology ensures clean, clear and safe water to reuse again for sustainable living without compromise on quality of life.
TCL Alto 9+ Dolby Atmos soundbar
This unique and modern looking 3.1-channel soundbar features a centre channel and side speakers, plus a wireless subwoofer that can be wall-mounted or placed in front of your TV.
Featuring backward tilted speakers on the side to deliver more powerful immersive sound thanks to Dolby Atmos Audio support, this soundbar truly promises to fill the room with some crisp and bassy sound when consuming media.
The sound bar is also compatible with Chromecast and AirPlay 2, allowing for iOS and Android phones and tablets to easily stream content straight to the Alto 9+.
Orcam Hear
Speaking of sound, it is hard for those who don’t have full hearing to isolate sounds in busy rooms, but this Israeli start-up has re-envisioned the classic hearing aid as an AI powered device worn around the neck.
Using cameras and onboard machine learning to tell which person in a crowded room is talking to its user. The device can more effectively identify and isolate sounds filtering background noise from directed conversation then beam their speech to Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids.
With nearly 500 million people suffering from hearing loss, this new accessibility product promises a smarter and more intuitive way to hear the world around you when you normally wouldn’t.
Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Fold
With folding tech. becoming a real thing in 2020, Lenovo got our attention with a world first folding laptop.
This fully functional Windows PC that has a folding OLED display is a first of its kind and is made from a combination of carbon fiber, metal alloy and leather. The device can morph into multiple modes, from a small footprint device into a fully flat 13.3-inch display, delivering laptop efficiency with smartphone portability.
We particularly like their integration of a Bluetooth Mini Fold Keyboard. When the device is folded closed, the keyboard is stored and wirelessly charged inside the system and secured with magnets.
Samsung Q950TS 8K QLED TV
This last one was my personal favorite this year, a near bezel-less TV capable of outputting 8k content and a footprint that is just 15mm deep, this truly was a work of art.
With a screen to body ratio of 99%, this bad boy is all screen and just seems to leap off the wall. With impressive near HDR quality output that is colorful and vibrant, it also has impressive audio output too, with built-in drivers on the top, sides, bottom, and rear of the TV meaning you get some room filling sound.
Lastly, AI-powered picture and audio modes mean the television itself can intelligently adapt sound and image based on the characteristics of your room.
