The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the foldable phone for people who are terrified of foldable phones. In a market obsessed with shaving off micrometers to become as thin as a whisper (and often as fragile), Google’s third-generation foldable has apparently been hitting the gym, eating raw eggs, and listening to motivational speeches. It arrives not as a delicate supermodel, but as a heavyweight champion. It’s bulky, it’s beefy, and it’s visually almost identical to last year’s model. But beneath that familiar, chunky exterior lies the single biggest leap in foldable technology this year: a full-blown IP68 dust and water resistance rating. This isn’t just an upgrade; it’s Google throwing down a steel-toed boot and daring the elements to do their worst.

Let’s talk about that “Pro” designation, because here it seems to stand for “Protection.” The new gearless steel hinge is a marvel of engineering, not because it’s invisible, but because it’s impenetrable. For the first time, “don’t take it to the beach” is no longer a mandatory foldable-owner’s creed. This is the first foldable that doesn’t feel like a ticking time bomb of sand and pocket lint. Google has paired this ruggedness with some genuinely brilliant screens. The 6.4-inch cover display is bright, beautiful, and—most importantly—has the aspect ratio of an actual, usable phone. The massive 8-inch internal screen is a photon cannon, hitting a scorching 3,000 nits of peak brightness. This is a foldable built for the real world, not a hermetically sealed cleanroom.

When you pry this tank open, you’re greeted by Android 16, which is less an operating system and more a vessel for Google’s ever-expanding AI universe. The new Tensor G5 chip is an AI powerhouse, running the onboard Gemini model with spooky efficiency. The new “Magic Cue” feature is the star, contextually offering up flight details or order numbers before you even think to look for them. The AI-powered call translations now replicate the caller’s voice, which is equal parts amazing and unsettling. And yet, for all this intelligence, the folding aspect of the software feels like an afterthought. The split-screen is fine, but there are precious few “wow” moments that justify the giant square screen, leaving you with a mini-tablet that feels more like a missed opportunity than a revolutionary form factor.

Where the “Fold” software falters, the “Pixel” camera hardware soars. This is, without a doubt, the best camera system ever put into a foldable, full stop. While competitors are still trying to make flagship-level cameras fit, Google just went ahead and did it. The 48MP main sensor is classic Pixel: sharp, contrasty, and borderline magical in low light. The real winner, however, is the 10.8MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. It smokes the Samsung Z Fold 7’s 3x zoom, delivering crisp, usable shots from a distance. New AI tricks like “Camera Coach” (which suggests better angles) and “Add Me” (which digitally inserts the photographer into group shots) are clever, but the raw quality of the hardware is the real story here.

Now, for the “Pro” compromises. While the Tensor G5 is a genius at AI tasks, it’s not a valedictorian in raw gaming performance. It still gets handily beaten by the Snapdragon chips in Samsung’s rivals, so high-frames-per-second gamers should look elsewhere. And then there’s the unavoidable, room-filling elephant: this thing is a brick. At 258 grams and 10.8mm thick when closed, it makes the svelte Galaxy Z Fold 7 look like a piece of origami. It’s a full 9.1 ounces. You will never, ever forget this phone is in your pocket, partly because it will be creating its own gravitational pull.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a fascinating, if contradictory, device. It is the most boring-looking foldable of the year, yet the most excitingly durable. It’s an AI savant that’s a bit of a dunce at using its own giant screen. It is, ultimately, the Fold for the pragmatist. If you’ve lusted after a foldable but couldn’t stomach the $1,800 price tag for a device that could be murdered by a grain of sand, this is your phone. It’s the first foldable that doesn’t demand you change your life to accommodate its fragility. It’s the “sensible” choice in the most exotic category on the market—a brilliant, heavy, and unbreakable paradox.
