Growing up on the west coast of Australia, you learn to live with the potential threat of sharks. Not a year goes by where some poor unsuspecting person is a victim of a shark attack and most of them don’t survive. As with most things, we tend to dismiss it and say that won’t happen to me, however, what if there was a way to add just that little but of reassurance the next time you do go swimming in the ocean? Well, now you can with the Sharkbanz 2.

Born from the unifying fear of sharks, the creators of Sharkbanz wanted to create something that spoke to their four core beliefs that an item such as this should be – effective, simple, affordable, and stylish. Sharkbanz 2 is an active shark deterrent that is worn on the wrist or ankle and uses patented magnetic technology to repel sharks. The strong electromagnetic field generated by the band is detected by the animal and is sensed as unusual from anything the animal would feed on normally in its food chain and they are dissuaded. The non-painful sensation the animal detects is analogous and disrupts their electroreception (sensitivity to electrical fields) which the animal uses to navigate at night, when in murky water, and to hunt.

It is important to note that sharks don’t have hands, so they use their mouths to feel. Therefore, most shark bites are “hit-and-run” attacks, meaning the shark bites, then quickly leaves after it recognizes someone isn’t food. Unfortunately, a simple case of mistaken identity can do a lot of damage. Sharkbanz warns curious sharks that the wearer is not food before they bite, reducing the risk of hit and run attacks.

While we have yet to have the opportunity to test the band in Southern Ontario, the product is backed by some serious science and has already been successfully tested on Bull Sharks, Hammerheads, Blacktips, Lemon Sharks, Sharpnose Sharks, and Caribbean Reef Sharks. The team at Sharkbanz are also committed to improve the Sharkbanz’ effectiveness through strategic research and development with the help of Dr. Eric Stroud and Dr. Patrick Rice of Shark Defense Technologies – the leaders in shark repellent technology. The team also has many videos of them personally testing the devices with live sharks which we thought was very cool.
