If you are a child of the 80’s, chances are you probably would like to own a DeLorean, hit 88 miles per hour and go back to the future. For everyone else, the folks at Bad Dog Design have created what could be the ultimate tribute to the time traveling movie franchise Back to the Future – the Henry Clock.
Bad Dog Designs started when the founder of the company became interested in the inner workings of different forms of electronics as a child and later in adulthood discovered that Nixie tubes he had played with as a kid were being used in interesting clock designs. This dose of nostalgia helped push Paul Parry to create clocks for others that use this form of technology.
The Henry clock looks like the brainchild of an alarm clock and the flux capacitor, the brilliant brass and wood steampunk design is quite striking and features an engraved time machine on the front face with the years 1955 and 1985, two iconic years referenced in the original movie.
The highlight feature of the design is the exposed electrical components including 4 off IN-12 Nixie tubes, an electronic device used for displaying numerals or other information using glow discharge. Put simply, each individual glass tube contains a wire-mesh anode and multiple cathodes, shaped like numerals, when power is applied to the clock and cathodes it emits an orange glow discharge which truly looks great. Best of all, each tube has a shelf life of approximately 20 years.
The clock can be run in both 12- or 24-hour time and features customizable LED back lighting to add some extra glow to the clock face, though, we preferred ours turned off. It should also be noted that the clock cleverly counts down seconds and even cycles through numbers randomly, which did freak us out at first, but we got over it. Put simply, for fans of the movie, the clock looks exactly like something flawed Doc Brown would make himself and is quite the attraction in a room that you truly need to see for yourself.
If you too want to pay homage to Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale and want to have your very own unique timepiece in your house reminding you of the importance of time, then this should be on your radar!
