These days, being connected is everything. It powers most of what we do – schooling, work, play, and more – but sadly when it comes to Wi-Fi networks, not all are created equal. When we initially reviewed the Gryphon Connect back in 2019, we proclaimed it as the “best mesh system on the market and is one that should be in every home that cares about your digital wellbeing” and in the past 3 years, we still feel that to be the case. However, now Gryphon has returned with a welcome refresh that brings some necessary upgrades to an already stellar mesh Wi-Fi system.

We were always fans of the monolithic design language of the original Connect and it returns here in all its glory. Each unit features two backhaul capable ethernet ports (LAN and WAN) with a power input and offers simultaneous tri-band Wi-Fi with maximum data rates of approximately 591Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, 1,237Mbps on one of the 5GHz bands, and 2,475Mbps on the second 5GHz band.
Each satellite delivers reliable whole-home coverage up to 3000 square feet per node which is made possible by a quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 512MB of flash memory that powers the six embedded high power internal antennas that work very well. In our testing, on a gigabit connection, we were easily able to hit advertised speeds, and even in notorious Wi-Fi black spots in our office, the connection was still strong and stable which is a testament to the quality of Gryphons’ system.

There are also some powerful connectivity features onboard including the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technologies, including WPA3 encryption, Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) data transmissions, MU-MIMO simultaneous data streaming, and direct-to-client signal beamforming. We also continue to be impressed by the regular security updates and intelligent machine learning that Gryphon is known for, as it recognizes each device connected to your network, analyzes its behavior, and alerts users to unusual activity and vulnerabilities that could be putting your security at risk.
Speaking of security, the Gryphon AX also establishes what they call an intelligent network firewall or sensible protection for your kids, with their parental controls and content management. The Gryphon app (which remains one of our favorite network managements apps to date) allows users to set age level restrictions for each device, approve or deny access in real-time, and even set internet time limits for each child as well. The icing on this customizable cake is the ability to set user-profiles and tweak access control for that user by restricting access to specific categories of content and apps. Administrators can monitor browsing history, manage smart devices, enforce safe searches on the web and even completely pause the internet and spend more time with the family, which is a feature that should be on every router!

To wrap up, Gryphon continues to build on its growing reputation as being one of the most comprehensive, reliable, and safe mesh Wi-Fi systems currently available on the market today. This iterative improvement to one of our favorite mesh systems from just a few years ago proves to us that Gryphon is a brand to watch in 2022 and beyond.
