90 Days with the Ride1Up Core-5 XR

When gas prices in Toronto hit $2 plus per liter ($0.53 per gallon), many people including me, started to look for alternative means of transport to offset rising fuel prices and when you drive a larger vehicle, this adds up quickly per week. Naturally, we turned our attention to our less costly two-wheel friends and when we were given the opportunity to try the Core-5 by One Cut favorite Ride1Up, we knew we had to put it through its paces. For the past 90 days, I placed my car keys on the wall hook and used the Core-5 exclusively as my means of transport and I walked away very impressed.

The San Diego-based team of Ride1Up set out to do something that others in this space have not yet done – create streamlined, fast, and affordable electric bikes that offer unrivaled levels of independence and efficiency. They want to change the way we get around our communities and want their buyers to commit to a more environmentally conscious approach to getting from point A to B.

The first thing you notice about the Core-5 is just how much like a non-motorized bicycle it looks, and we think this was the right play here. Available in three different colors and in an ST or XR variant (the ST does not have the reach bar), the Core-5 features a lightweight alloy frame with internally protected and lockable electronics, meaning what powers this bad boy is out of sight yet still accessible. Assembling the bike was also a breeze with some very helpful step-by-step instructional videos. The whole thing only took this butter fingers here who is writing this, about 30 minutes and that is saying something.

The build quality of the Core-5 is excellent, but it is also paired with some high-quality parts and components that bring this e-bike into a different value proposition. The bike is powered by a 48V Geared Hub Shengyi 750w sustained motor with a decently lightweight 48V, 10.4Ah battery that delivers some serious range before dying out. While your usage may vary, we averaged about 50 miles or 80km before needing a full recharge, which we found to be excellent. It is also worth noting that this e-bike is both throttle and pedal assist with an inbuilt cadence sensor, meaning, not only is the speed coming from the 500W rear hub motor, but it’s also stemming from the fast 27-inch Kenda Kwick Seven rolling tires and the large 44t chainring that keeps the bike moving forward.

The Core-5 also features some high-quality Shimano gear shifters, derailers, and cassette bundled with some reliable Tektro 160mm Mechanical Disc brakes with an electric cut-off sensor. The welcome large and vivid adjustable speed LCD is also a nice touch and we found it very easy to control even while riding. As far as the handling was concerned, there was also a lot to like here. The upright geometrically sound frame, spring loaded kick stand and 640mm swept-back handlebars with some near-perfect rubber grips made for a beautifully ergonomic ride and the use of a Selle Royal Freeway Plush Gel Saddle meant weight is distributed well even when rounding corners. The Core-5 also utilizes a lever throttle (mentioned earlier) that’s located on the left side of the handlebar, while I originally thought my bell was broken, this turned out to be a welcome surprise and offers some decent and quick acceleration when needed. Speaking of acceleration, we also have come to appreciate how Ride1UP set up the ride assistance levels in a way that feels natural when pedaling. All of the different PAS levels advanced approximately 2-3 mph, and each felt well calibrated and in our book was true to what it should feel like when riding such a bike.

So, after 90 days, what is our conclusion? The Ride1Up Core-5 XT is one of the most comfortable and easily recommendable e-bikes for someone looking for an alternative way to get around. Build quality is excellent, battery life is respectable, and it is chock full of high-quality parts and components that punch way above its price category. I could easily see myself transitioning to this bike on a full-time basis if, here in Canada, we didn’t do so much damn driving because of the sheer size of the country. If you are a city dweller or work close to home, the Core-5 is the perfect companion if you don’t want the hassle of high gas prices, car loans, and insurance. The overall speed and smooth ride continue to impress, and it is a head turner that some may appreciate. Put simply, this is an excellent option for those wanting more from their bicycle.
