TomTom, known largely for GPS navigation, is aiming to literally make a splash with their 4K waterproof action camera to rival household juggernaut GoPro’s recent offerings. Known as the Bandit, stealing away their rivals’ success will be no easy feat; however, TomTom has put some clever innovation into their action camera that makes this a worthwhile competitor.

First and foremost, The Bandit can film in full 4K Ultra HD at 15 frames per second (30fps in time lapse mode) with a 3840×2160 resolution for crystal clear picture on the go. The quality is exceptional and even cinematic and looks great on a corresponding 4K TV. Also, worth noting, is that their action camera can take some very nice still shots too with its 16MP snapper including burst mode. If that doesn’t impress you, you also have full 1080p slow motion video capture as well for some great all-around versatility.

However, none of this is new to action cameras, what really sets the Bandit in a class of its own are some of the clever added extras. To start with, you get exceptional battery life where you can film up to 3 hours nonstop in full HD, a very welcome change in the action camera market. The device itself also comes equip with motion sensors which track metrics such as acceleration, descent, g-force, rotation and more and will highlight it on the recorded video file so that you don’t have to go searching for it, this was especially useful on days when we recorded hours of footage. Lastly, the bandit is compatible with most current GoPro mounts so you get easy click and go mounting capability without having to buy any additional equipment.

Best of all though, is the ability of the Bandit to be completely wireless. The camera itself has an integrated USB 3.0 and MicroSD card reader for expandable storage. You simply detach the inner console of the camera, plug it in to your laptop’s USB port and away you go. We found this to be quite ingenious and prevents the worry of not having the appropriate cables at the times we really need them. It is also important to note TomTom’s own bandit app for smartphones that allows you to edit and post videos online in mere minutes. You simply connect wirelessly to the device, download your video, edit, and go. This makes the Bandit the ultimate portable filming and editing tool.
