For almost 20 years, Tenda, have been providing consumers with easy-to-install and affordable networking solutions. While they may not necessarily be a household name, their MW6 mesh Wi-Fi system is a testament to their high standards of quality with a product that not only offers excellent performance and reliability, but also, is very affordably priced.
We will start this review by saying – out of all the mesh systems we have tried these past few months, this is the one that is most suitable for the average consumer and it all starts with the setup. The MW6, by far, had the easiest initial setup of any system we have tried. The tesseract style glossy white boxes look great and are already paired out of the box, so no messy app-based nonsense to get them talking to each other. You simply take one of the units out, connect it to your modem via Ethernet cable, download the app and simply position the others within 35-40 feet of the main node and that’s it! Seriously, it was a 5-minute install at best, which we absolutely loved.
A set of three units can cover an impressive 6000 square feet which we found to be accurate in our testing and it automatically maintains its network status, so, if a nova is disconnected, it will reconnect to an available nova to keep you online. Each unit features 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports per mesh point, a convenient reset button and simultaneous dual band frequency on both the 5GHz channel: Up to 867Mbps and the 2.4GHz channel: Up to 300Mbps with an AC1200 rating. It also features the latest wireless standards including IEEE 802.11ac/a/n 5GHz and IEEE 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz. A feature we also don’t often see with mesh systems is wireless roaming standard IEEE802.11v/r which allows you to more efficiently go from room-to-room without losing your connection.
There is also some of the latest innovations in wireless broadcasting technology inside these little gems: Wave2 MU-MIMO and Beamforming allows multiple device connections at the same time without loss of speed while maintaining optimal signal strength from connected devices, even through walls. The Tenda Nova app too, is very easy to use and just works, there is no searching through cluttered sub menus to find what you need. We love that you also can monitor and control the network away from home always and par for the course is the ability to schedule and even cease connections at any time, which is perfect for parents.
In our testing, we were very satisfied with the output of the MW6, we were getting consistent, close to advertised speeds from our service provider on this dual band system. Signal was also not dramatically weakened the further you went from the main node like others we have reviewed. Our only recommendation would be the addition of a third back-haul band that would better allow the units to communicate with each other wirelessly and can also improve output on both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands across the network.
The Tenda Nova MW6 WiFi system is a great option for consumers who don’t have the time or want to spend hours configuring a mesh system. Its greatest draw-cards are that it is easy to install and just works and we are always going to be fans when consistency trumps flare.
